This healing garden for the Union Hospital in Lynn was designed with a sequence of entry gateways and spaces to accentuate the sense of arrival at the garden. We included meandering paths with hidden destinations to contrast the rigid architecture and routine of the hospital. Lush plantings in soft colors give a sense of immersion in nature, and a 160 ft. long recirculating stream is home to koi. A circular terrace is suitable for group therapy, while benches in remote corners of the garden provide privacy for patients and family members. A chapel garden offers a non-denominational spiritual setting for prayer. A gurney pad includes hook-ups for life support systems, so even the bedridden can experience the garden, perhaps when their time has come.
